There are two types of internships:
- Internship relevant work experience (5 ECTS) – This internship serves to gain work experience that is relevant for your development as a professional in the field of the Built Environment
- Internship academic work experience (15 ECTS) – This internship has a major academic learning component, with the opportunity to apply state of the art research methods or work on the key aspects of a design
You can do an internship within the space for free electives within your track or register track, or you can do it extra-curricular.
Why an internship?
An internship is a great opportunity to gain experience in the field of your interest. An internship that matches your ambitions and career goals can enhance your academic, career, and/or personal development. Doing an internship, supervised by a professional, gives you the opportunity to experience what it is like to work in a company environment or in an academic research environment, and it allows you to apply the skills and knowledge you've acquired during your studies.

There are a lot of possibilities to find a workplace for your internship. Below are some examples:
Procedure
- Together with the internship provider (company) you set out the contents and duration of the internship. Make sure to discuss the details with the responsible lecturer for internships of your unit (see below), to check if it meets the learning objective of the internship course:

- Together with the internship provider, you sign an internship agreement. You must use one of the following standard formats:
- Standard TU/e Workplace Agreement (you can download it here). This agreement is meant for Dutch students and students with an EU or EEA nationality. Please note that only the managing director of the department of the Built Environment is authorized to sign the agreement. You have to fill in the name and job title of the managing director on the form yourself.
- Nuffic internship agreement (download) This agreement is compulsory for students with a nonEU/EEA nationality. Both TU/e and the internship provider should keep a copy!
If the internship provider uses a non-standard contract, you should seek prior approval from our legal advisor. See instructions on the ‘Annex form internship agreement’.
- Hand in the signed contract together with the ‘Annex form internship agreement’ to the responsible lecturer of your unit for a signature. You can download the form from this page.
- Deliver the contract together with the annex form (signed by the responsible lecturer) to the Education Office. You will be notified when the department’s managing director has signed the internship agreement.
- Make sure the internship provider receives a copy of the fully signed internship agreement.
- After finishing the internship, deliver your report according to the agreements you made with the responsible lecturer. You will receive an assessment, and the result will be send to the Education Office.
