Stage 3: Setting up your internal double diploma program proposal

If you have gathered enough information, you can start setting up your internal double diploma program.

Internal double diploma template proposal form

Use the internal double diploma template  form  to set up your proposal for the internal double diploma program. This form offers both an overview of the total internal double diploma program as well as an overview of the division of the courses from the total program over both programs. Also it shows per program involved what the extension is in regards to a regular program in order to be able to do the internal double diploma program (165-195 EC). With this form it is clear what kind of choices you’ve made and how your programs (for both master programs involved) are set up. You will also need this form for your request to both Examination Committees. For the programs in question, it may be necessary for a mentor or other staff member to sign the form. Please check the education guide of the programs involved for these requirements or ask the academic advisor.

Together the components within the internal double diploma program (165 – 195 EC) are the total internal double diploma program. However, per program involved an exam program needs to be set up (in OSIRIS). That’s why the form consists of 2 columns, one for program A and one for program B. Program A and program B are composed of the same components (of the one total program), yet the components can be placed differently per program. For example, a specific study component will be a core course in program A and a ‘course 2nd program’ in program B. Check an example of a filled-out form here.

For both programs that are part of the internal double diploma program you fill in a column. Place the courses in the relevant sections. General terms, applicable for all TU/e-programs, are used for the sections. Maybe for your program(s) it is common to use other terms. Please use the section most applicable or, when you have downloaded the form, adjust the terms if that helps you.

The left and right column each contain a ‘courses 2nd program’ section. Place the subjects that are distinctive from the other program in this section. You can also use the courses from the other program in the ‘electives’ section. Please discuss this with your academic advisor (stage 4).

Fill in the form as far as possible, including course codes and names. Check the curriculum and requirements per specialization of the master program in the education guide of each program to make sure that you've included all the mandatory subjects in your proposal.

Possible homologation courses that needs to be finished before being admissible to the master program(s) are not part of the internal double diploma program. When it is applicable in your case, please check the FAQ for information regarding homologation courses.

Please bear in mind that the subjects in the ‘Courses 2nd program’ section are not included in the calculation for a possible cum laude predicate. The calculation only includes the credits of the main program, with exception of the graduation project as it also is for regular programs. For both programs the judicium will be calculated separately and when applicable, granted. Please check the FAQ on this subject.

Combined Graduation project

Preferably a combined graduation project is part of the internal double diploma program. In this case the core aspects of both master programs involved have to be clearly identifiable in the project. This will be assessed by each of the Examination Committees for their own program. Please contact both academic advisors and both thesis supervisors for the possibilities and requirements.

A combined graduation project is always 45, 60 or 75 EC, depending on the regular sizes of the graduation projects of the programs involved. To be able to decide on the size of the combined graduation project the following applies: the largest regular size of the graduation project of the programs involved is added with 15 EC. For example, if the graduation project of program A regularly has a size of 30 EC and the graduation project of program B 45 EC, then the combined graduation project has a size of 60 EC.

The combined graduation project is graded within one assessment committee and is assessed with two grades, one for each program.
Indicate in the form if you opt for a combined graduation project. Select ‘combined graduation project program A + program B’ or select ‘single graduation project program A (or B)’ and select the amount of credits that apply.

A combined graduation project is part of the ‘main’ program for both program A and B. When two separate graduation projects are taken the gradation project of program B is part of ‘courses 2nd program’ in program A and vice versa. In the latter case, please bear in mind to not cross the maximum amount of credits for an internal double diploma program (maximum of 45 to 75 extra credits, with a total of 165 to 195 EC).

Check out an example of scenario 1 with a combined graduation project  and scenario 2 with separate graduation projects.

Study planning

Make a study planning for all the courses, possible internship and the graduation project, divided over the next academic years. This way you will have an overview of all educational components per quarter. Please make sure your proposed internal double diploma program is ‘achievable’ within the requirements. If this is not possible you maybe have to change your program or conclude that an internal double diploma program is not possible for the programs in question. Discuss the (other) possibilities with your academic advisor(s).

You can use the PlanApp for planning your program. However, you have to take into consideration the fact that the PlanApp is not designed for planning two programs simultaneously.
Bear in mind that programs can change on content if you setup your program in an early stage.

Double diploma program with the master Science, Education and Communication (SEC)

Planning an internal double diploma program with the master Science, Education and Communication (SEC) of the Eindhoven School of Education?

In this case, according to article 6 of the directive from the Executive Board, a derogation applies. This derogation means that internal double diploma programs involving the master SEC will have a lower total study load for obtaining two degrees. The study load for a combination with the master SEC is 150 EC. The program of the master SEC has a different setup than other master programs, therefore the template proposal form cannot be used for both programs. For the master SEC a study contract is drawn up and signed. For the other program you can use the form, in this case you will only use and fill in one column. In this column you will show how the master SEC-components fit in the other program (with a total of 150 EC), please check out the example. Please also check the PER of the master SEC.
