Cancellation of residence permit

Once you graduate or terminate your studies, you no longer meet the requirements of your residence permit for studies. As a result, we are required to deregister you with the IND within one month after deregistration. 

The following applies if you will be unsubscribed from the TU/e because you have graduated

  • If your residence permit is still valid for 3 months or less as of the date you have graduated, the residence permit will end with the date of the card. 
  • If your residence permit is still valid for longer than 3 months, it will stay valid for 3 more months as of the date you have graduated.

The following applies if your TU/e enrolment has been cancelled for another reason than graduation

  • If your residence permit is still valid for 3 months or less as of the date you are deregistered from TU/e, the residence permit will end with the date of the card. 
  • If your residence permit is still valid for longer than 3 months as of the date you are deregistered from TU/e, it will end immediately. 

You will be informed by the IND about the cancellation by means of a letter. As soon as you have received this notification from the IND, you will have to leave the Netherlands within 4 weeks. You may appeal to the decision to cancel your residence permit.

Please note that the expiration date of your Dutch residence permit card is leading. Meaning that if your card expires before you receive the notification letter from the IND, you must leave the Netherlands before the expiration date of your card.

Please be advised that the success of any follow-up or other procedures regarding legal residence in the Netherlands are related to how you manage your departure procedure.

If you wish to remain in the Netherlands, you will have to apply for a Dutch residence permit with another purpose than study.

Handing in your residence card

When leaving the Netherlands, you are compelled to return your residence permit card to the IND. If you don’t do this, it may jeopardize future visa applications. You can hand in your card in two ways: 

  • You can send your residence document together with the Notification Form for Foreign Nationals to the IND. The address is stated in the notification form. 
  • You can send the residence document to the IND Documents Office. The address is:

We do recommend taking the card with you during your journey back home as you might need to show it to the military police at Schiphol Airport or during a stopover in another Schengen state. 

Make sure you always invalidate your card before sending it. This can be done by cutting the card in half (do not cut it all the way through) or by perforating it.
