Student guidance

At Mechanical Engineering we find it very important that you get the right support and guidance during your studies. Throughout your master’s program you will get support and guidance from different people in different roles.

Academic advisor

Your academic advisor is your first point of contact for all study related questions and problems, such as discussing your study progress, questions about your planning, or doubts about your program or study method. But also for questions about study delay due to personal circumstances or other health issues, your academic is your first point of contact.

An academic advisor is not tied to a particular project or course but assists you with all aspects of your study program. This guidance occurs through personal conversations, where both you and the academic advisor can take the initiative. The discussions are confidential and take place in an open atmosphere.

If necessary, the academic advisor can refer you to a student psychologist or student counselor, or a study management or study choice advisor, for more information click here.In addition to individual help or meetings, it is also possible to participate in specific group trainings in the field of study management and personal development.

Student mentor (only available to master’s students new to TU/e)

If you are a first-year master's student new to TU/e, you will be assigned a student mentor to help you settle in. This mentor will be your first point of contact for all practical questions. You will be guided in a group with other first-year master's students who are also new to TU/e, making it a perfect opportunity to get to know your fellow students. All student mentors are senior master's students in Mechanical Engineering, so they are familiar with the program. Please note that this applies only to the first and second quartiles of the first year of the master's program and only for students new to TU/e.

Teacher mentor

Before the start of your master’s you have been assigned to a research section via the Master Allocation Procedure. From within this research section, you will be paired to a teacher mentor who will provide you with program related supervision. Your mentor is a full, associate or assistant professor who will guide you in composing your program, finding an internship position and orientation on a possible graduation subject.

Internship and Thesis supervisor

During your internship you will be supervised by your TU/e internship supervisor. The  supervisor is a (assistant/associate/full) professor from the Mechanical Engineering department. If you are undertaking an external project, you will have both an internal TU/e supervisor and an external supervisor. Please note that the internal TU/e supervisor carries the final responsibility for the project.

By the time you begin your graduation project, you will be supervised by a thesis supervisor. Your supervisor should be a (assistant, associate, or full) professor from your allocated division. He or she will provide guidance throughout your graduation project. If you are undertaking an external project, you will have both an internal TU/e supervisor and an external supervisor. Please note that the internal TU/e supervisor carries the final responsibility for the project.
